Triphala Churna

Ref: Charaka Samhita (Sutra Sthana), Bhavaprakasha Nighantu

Triphala Churna is a highly revered classical Ayurvedic polyherbal formulation made from three potent fruits. Acting as a gentle bowel tonic and a powerful Rasayana (rejuvenator), it detoxifies the digestive tract, boosts immunity, and balances all three Doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha).

Indications & Uses

  • Chronic constipation and irregular bowel movements.
  • Indigestion, bloating, and flatulence.
  • Eye disorders (used as an eyewash - Netra Tarpana).
  • Weight management and obesity.
  • Poor immunity and chronic fatigue.
  • Skin diseases (acne, eczema) due to toxic blood.

Key Ingredients

Triphala is composed of three dried fruits taken in equal proportions (1:1:1) or sometimes in a specific ratio depending on the classical text:

  • Amalaki (Emblica officinalis) - Amla: Rich in Vitamin C, it cools Pitta dosha, supports the immune system, and acts as a potent antioxidant.
  • Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica) - Baheda: Excellent for Kapha dosha. It supports the respiratory system, reduces mucus, and aids in bone and muscle tissue health.
  • Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) - Harad: Known as the "King of Medicines." It balances Vata dosha, gently scrapes toxins (Ama) from the gut, and stimulates healthy bowel movements.

Dosage & Anupana

  • For Digestion & Constipation: 3 to 6 grams (½ to 1 teaspoon) at bedtime.
  • Anupana (Carrier/Vehicle): Take with lukewarm water (for detox) or warm milk (for rejuvenation).
  • For Immunity & Eye Health: Take it in the morning on an empty stomach with a teaspoon of honey and ghee (in unequal proportions).

The Science of Triphala

Triphala is not just a laxative; it is classified in Ayurveda as a Tridoshic Rasayana, meaning it simultaneously cleanses and nourishes the body while bringing Vata, Pitta, and Kapha into perfect harmony.

Unlike modern chemical laxatives that deplete the gut flora and create dependency, Triphala gently stimulates the intestinal walls, supports a healthy gut microbiome, and improves nutrient absorption.

Metabolic & Detoxifying Action

The high concentration of tannins, gallic acid, and Vitamin C in Triphala makes it a potent free-radical scavenger. It scrapes away Ama (metabolic toxins) from the gastrointestinal tract and purifies the blood. Regular consumption enhances liver function and promotes a healthy metabolic rate, making it highly effective for holistic weight management.
