Sukhavirecana Vatī

Ref: Siddhayogasaṅgraha. Ānāhādhikāra. 10:14 Sukhavirecana Vatī

Sukhavirecana Vatī is a traditional Ayurvedic tablet used to help clean the bowels and relieve constipation. It works as a gentle purgative, meaning it encourages the body to expel waste. The medicine is often taken at night with cold water to support a smooth, overnight bowel movement. It is also used in Ayurvedic detox-therapy (Virechana) to remove built-up toxins from the digestive system.

Indications & Uses

Constipation – promotes regular, gentle bowel movements.
Bowel cleansing (Virechana) – used in Ayurvedic detox programs to clear the intestines.
Other digestive problems – sometimes recommended for occasional diarrhea, malabsorption, or dysentery, always under a qualified practitioner’s guidance.

Key Ingredients

Jay apāla (purified Croton tiglium seed) – 13 units
Śuṇṭhī (dry ginger, Zingiber officinale) – 24 g

These two herbs together give the tablet its laxative power while also protecting the gut lining.

Dosage & Anupana

Dose: 250 mg (one tablet)
When: At bedtime
Vehicle: Cold water (Śītajala)
Storage: Keep in a cool, dry place, sealed from light.

Important: Because Jay apāla is a strong purgative, only use this tablet under the supervision of an Ayurvedic doctor. Do not use if you are pregnant, a child, or have inflammatory bowel disease.

How the Ingredients Work

Jay apāla contains compounds that irritate the intestinal wall just enough to increase fluid secretion and stimulate muscle contractions. This action creates a laxative effect.

Śuṇṭhī supplies gingerols and shogaols, which have mild anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. These help calm the gut and protect it from too much irritation while still supporting normal movement.

When mixed with water and ground into a uniform paste, the two herbs form a solid tablet of about 250 mg. The ginger balances the strong heat of the croton seed, making the overall effect smoother and safer for the stomach lining.

Modern View

Laboratory studies show that croton seed oils can trigger intestinal secretions and peristalsis, while ginger compounds can reduce inflammation and aid motility. Together, they aim to empty the bowels without causing serious damage when taken as directed.
