Ref: Siddhayogasaṅgraha, Atisāra-Pravāhikā-Grahaṇyādhikāra, 10:4 Kuṭajaghana Vaṭī

KUṬAJAGHANA VATĪ is a classical Ayurvedic tablet used to support digestive health. It contains the bark of Kuṭaja (Holarrhena antidysenterica) and the root powder of Ativiṣā (Aconitum heterophyllum). Indications & Uses

  • Diarrhoea (Atīsāra) – reduces loose stools and abdominal cramps.
  • Malabsorption syndrome (Grahaṇī) – improves nutrient absorption, eases bloating.
  • Dysentery (Pravāhikā) – controls mucus or blood in stool; anti-amoebic.
  • Diarrhoea with fever (Jvarātīśāra) – for gut upset accompanied by fever.
  • Ulcerative colitis – soothes colon inflammation and helps stop bleeding.
  • Intestinal infections (Kṛmi) – supports removal of harmful microbes.

Key Ingredients

  • Kuṭaja (bark) (Holarrhena antidysenterica): Aqueous extract / decoction – astringent, anti-microbial, fights diarrheal pathogens.
  • Ativiṣā (root) (Aconitum heterophyllum): Powder – stimulates digestion, reduces spasms, supports nutrient absorption.

Dosage & Anupana

Take 1 to 2 tablets (250–500 mg each) once or twice daily with cold water (śītajala). Use for 2–3 months under an Ayurvedic practitioner’s guidance. Pregnant women may use it if supervised.

How the Ingredients Work

Kuṭaja bark is a strong astringent. It dries excess fluid in the intestines, calms aggravated Pitta and Kapha, and fights microbes. Modern studies found alkaloids like conessine that act against diarrheal pathogens such as Entamoeba histolytica.

Ativiṣā root is a mild digestive stimulant. It ignites Agni, eases cramping, and helps the body absorb nutrients. Lab work shows antispasmodic and antioxidant compounds that may protect the gut lining.

When combined, Kuṭaja reduces fluid loss while Ativiṣā boosts digestion. This synergy supports regular bowel movements and better nutrient uptake.

Special Action – Haemostatic Support

Kuṭaja’s tannins can cause blood vessels to narrow and platelets to clump, which may help stop minor bleeding in the colon. This explains the traditional use for bleeding associated with ulcerative colitis, although human studies are limited.
