Arṣākūṭhāra Rasa is prepared by processing purified mineral powders (such as pārada, loha bhasma, abhraka bhasma) with botanical powders and animal products like gomūtra (cow urine) and snugdugdha (cow milk). This formulation has been employed in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries to address hemorrhoids and related digestive and inflammatory disorders.

Classical & Pharmacological Rationale

The formula leverages the synergistic interaction of metals and herbs to address the root causes of hemorrhoids. Key principles include:

  • Rasa-bhasma (pārada) provides deep-seated anti-inflammatory and hemostatic effects.
  • Gandhaka (sulphur) and Hala (alum) act as detoxifying agents, eliminating ama (metabolic waste).
  • Citraka (Plumbago zeylanica) and Marica (black pepper) stimulate agni (digestive fire), improving digestion and preventing pitta and kapha aggravation.
  • Bilva (Aegle marmelos) and Dantī (Berberis aristata) possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, reducing swelling and pain.
  • Cow urine (gomūtra) and milk (snugdugdha) serve as vehicles to enhance mineral assimilation and mitigate gastrointestinal irritation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can I expect relief from hemorrhoid symptoms?

Classical texts advise a gradual course; improvement is usually observed after several weeks of consistent dosing, provided diet and lifestyle measures are also followed.

Is Arṣākūṭhāra Rasa safe for pregnant or lactating women?

The formulation contains potent metals and is not recommended for pregnancy, lactation, or for individuals with severe vata imbalance unless prescribed by an experienced Ayurvedic practitioner.

Can I take this rasa together with allopathic medicines for hemorrhoids?

Because of possible interactions with anticoagulants and the metal content, consult a qualified physician before combining with allopathic drugs.

What side-effects might occur?

Mild gastrointestinal upset (nausea, loose stools) has been reported, likely due to the ushna (hot) nature of the preparation. Reducing the dose or taking with a larger amount of milk can help.

How should the medicine be stored?

Keep the powdered rasa in a dry, airtight container away from moisture and strong odors. The preparation remains stable for an extended period when stored properly.
