Abhayā Vatī is categorized under Vatī and Gutīkā preparations in Ayurveda, formed by compressing herbal and mineral ingredients into a pill. This formulation is designed to maintain its original color, smell, and potency when stored correctly. It is particularly effective for managing chronic fever (Jīrṇajvara), splenic disorders (Plīha Roga), ascites (Udararoga), jaundice (Kāmalā), hepatitis (Kumbhakāmalā), indigestion (Ajīrṇa), and anemia (Pāṇḍu Roga).

The formulation works by stimulating the digestive fire (Agni), clearing accumulated toxins (Ama), and reducing fluid retention in the abdomen. Its synergistic blend of herbs and minerals provides antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and anti-inflammatory benefits, making it a comprehensive remedy for abdominal disorders linked to Vāta dosha.

Actions & Benefits of the Ingredients

Haritaki (Abhayā): Cleanses the gut, balances Vāta and Kapha, and promotes gentle bowel movements. Rich in tannins and chebulagic acid, it exhibits antioxidant and mild laxative properties.

Black Pepper (Marica): Stimulates digestive fire (Agni), reduces cold heaviness, and enhances the absorption of other herbs. Piperine, its active compound, improves bioavailability and has anti-inflammatory effects.

Long Pepper (Kṛṣṇā/Pippalī): Strengthens digestion, clears mucus, and supports liver health. Piperlongumine, a key constituent, demonstrates hepatoprotective and immunomodulatory effects.

Borax (Ṭaṅkaṇa): A mild alkaline agent that helps reduce excess fluid in the abdomen and ease splenic discomfort. Sodium borate may assist in electrolyte balance.

Dhattūra (Kānakaja phala): After purification, it eases cramping pain and relaxes muscles. Contains tropane alkaloids like scopolamine and atropine, which are toxic if not processed correctly.

Spurge Latex (Snuhī kṣīra): Acts as a binding agent in pill formulation and provides mild purgative and anti-inflammatory effects. Contains diterpenes with demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity.

Together, these ingredients aim to revive sluggish digestion, clear toxins, and reduce fluid retention that contributes to conditions like splenomegaly and ascites. The blend’s antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and anti-inflammatory properties support liver health and metabolic balance.
