Ashwagandha

Botanical: Withania somnifera| English: Indian Ginseng

Ashwagandha is often called a magical herb, but in Ayurveda, we call it a ‘Rasayana’ (Rejuvenator). While famous for reducing stress, its real power lies in providing ‘Ojas’ (Vitality) and strength to the muscles and nerves. However, it is not for everyone.

Top Health Benefits

1Relieves Stress & Anxiety (Manasik Swasthya)

In modern science, Ashwagandha is classified as an Adaptogen, meaning it helps the body manage stress. In Ayurveda, it pacifies the Vata dosha in the nerves. It lowers cortisol levels, helping you feel calm without feeling sedated.

2Boosts Testosterone & Men’s Health (Vajikarana)

Ashwagandha is a powerful aphrodisiac (Vajikarana). It improves sperm quality, count, and motility. It provides strength to the penile tissue and helps in managing conditions like premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction caused by performance anxiety.

3Muscle Strength & Athletic Performance (Balya)

The name “Ashwagandha” translates to “Smell of a Horse,” implying that consuming it gives one the strength and stamina of a horse. It is excellent for gym-goers and athletes for faster muscle recovery and mass building (Brimhana therapy).

4Supports Thyroid Function

For those suffering from Hypothyroidism (High TSH), Ashwagandha helps stimulate the thyroid gland.

Caution: If you have Hyperthyroidism (Overactive thyroid), consult a doctor before use.

5Battles Insomnia (Anidra)

The botanical name somnifera literally means “sleep-inducing.” Taking Ashwagandha powder with warm milk/ghee at night calms the brain waves and promotes deep, restorative sleep.

Side Effects & Cautions

  • High Pitta Body Type: Since Ashwagandha is Ushna (Hot) in potency, people with excess body heat, acidity, or ulcers should avoid it or take it with cooling agents like milk/ghee.
  • Pregnancy: Strictly avoid during pregnancy as it can stimulate the uterus.
  • Auto-immune Diseases: People with Lupus or Rheumatoid Arthritis should consult a doctor first as it boosts immunity, which might flare up symptoms.
